It’s not really a surf camp or a hotel. It’s more a large house designed for demanding travellers – particularly those who have a passion for surfing.
Lars and John Malmqvist are father and son. Theese Swedes love Portugal, have an eye for interior design and are surfing enthusiasts. All of this can be seen in this place that, in the space of a few short months, has become the darling of Peniche – which has been proclaimed the “wave capital” and the stage of the surfing world circuit in Portugal.
The Malmqvists explain that the Surfers Lodge is “not really a hot; neither is it just a surf camp”. For a hotel, it is small, unpretentious with a family feel. For a surf camp, it’s luxurious, because not all of them boast such innovative design that focusses on small details that make all the difference and which demonstrate a real concern to reuse different materials. There are not many with restaurants with such daring and quality meals. For these reasons, it’s easier to categorise Surfers Lodge as a large house where friends, family and strangers meet and really come together.
The social aspect is key, which is why there are plenty of common areas at Surfers Lodge: whether it’s the lounge, which overlaps with the restaurant and bar, or the outside tables and terrace, which include a pool, jacuzzi and bar. On sunny days, the roof hosts yoga and Pilates classes, as well as sunset parties in the warmer months. Elsewhere in the lodge, there’s a Mudejar-style massage room, a store room for surfing equipment, as well as plans for a home cinema and an office for the Lodge’s surfing academy.
When it comes to choosing a room, there are plenty of options: if you’re coming with a group of friends, you can choose rooms with bunk beds; if you’re coming with a friend or family member, go for a twin room; if you’re a couple, pick one of the suites – the Bali is particularly romantic.
Get into the Lodge spirit and spend a few days in aloha mode, a Hawaiian word for a spirit of friendly acceptance, in Europe’s best surfing destination.
