Simone Almeida – 24 Hours in Porto

on Sep 1, 2008 in Now Boarding | No Comments

For Simone Almeida, manager of Casa da Música, Porto is experienced among people. They can be found at the Bolhão market and the cafes and restaurants that are the lifeblood of the city centre. You need a keen eye to discover the priceless things that make the capital of the north and perfect place to spend time.

A Minho girl through and through, Simone Almeida’s passion for the city of Porto began in her college days. An early interest in culture led to her first job in the area of cultural activities and she finally moved to the city in 2005. Currently her work involves renting out places and organising external events for the institution that has made such a major contribution to Portuguese culture and which continues to inspire her to public service.

I like original places. And I particularly like breakfast at Café Guarany, because of all of its history in the city of Porto and its long-standing relationship with music.

Like the majority of women, I’m also fascinated by the decorative arts and so a visit to the Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis is essential. Modern art, both in terms of painting and sculpture, is equally important in this museum.

Lunch is great at Cafeína, because of the cosmopolitan touch it gives to the city and the fusion of southern European cuisine. I always enjoy dinner at Bull & Bear and am constantly surprised by the creativity of the chef when I go there.

On a sunny day, a boat ride from Barca d`Alva to Foz allows us to appreciate the stunning and unforgettable views of the Douro. And each one seems like a scene from a film that remains fertile in our imagination.

There’s something special about wandering around the Bolhão market. This is the place where you get to know the city of Porto from within.  There beats the soul of the city.

A visit to Café Lusitano is a truly social experience that is both original and irreverent and where the smile you get when you walk through the door lasts until when you leave.

Every sip is imbued with the history of the slopes of the banks of the River Douro that transports it. The centuries of dedicated toil of men and women together with the unique climate of the region makes this wine worthy of its place in history.
