Rosa Pomar wool
One of the best ways to handle winter is to wrap up well with wool. Rosa Pomar, whose book Malhas Portuguesas was recently published, has been proving this point with her focus on the value of this art. In her Lisbon shop, Retrosaria, she also sells fabrics and wools and organises workshops where she teaches Portuguese techniques. The author has created brands Beiroa, Bucos, Mirandesa and Nordeste which use wool from the regions Serra da Estrela, Minho, Trás-os-Montes and São Miguel, Azores, respectively. This month there is a new yarn – Zagal –, which comes from the Alentejo and is produced in conjunction with Ancorme, the association dedicated to the merino breed of sheep.

Shoes Closet invests in the tradition of shoe-making, and that is the reason for a certain fascination for handcrafted items. It all began in the 1940s with a workshop making Alentejo boots. Today, Helena Amante and Miguel Marques, the heirs of the workshop and mentors of the brand, combine quality, craftsmanship and design to create unique pieces. The Reguengos boot is part of the Além Tejo collection and a tribute to ancestors, to the old tradition of textiles and the region’s cultural wealth, inspired by the typical Alentejo boot and the colours of the handmade Reguengos de Monsaraz blankets. Even in winter, it recalls the heat of the region.
