Inspira Santa Marta Hotel – Lisbon

An oasis in the centre of the city. A place where the word green has nothing to do with lush gardens but rather an ecological concept where the energy is positive. Breathe, find inspiration and enjoy the sleep of the just.

Entering this four-star hotel in the heart of the city, just off Avenida da Liberdade, is like immersing yourself in a world of tranquility. And because we need to breathe fresh air, particularly in big cities, the hotel concept is based on environmental sustainability, as well as well-being. The positive energy of the place can be seen in the careful, contemporary design.

Opened in October 2010, the Inspira Santa Marta focusses on social, environmental, economic and spiritual values. The director, Nicolas Roucos, tells us that Green Globe has given the hotel “the most demanding environmental certification” since the project’s inception, which meant it being the first Portuguese Carbono Zero hotel, which means all carbon emissions are compensated.

Environmental sustainability is fundamental for the hotel, particularly in terms of saving energy: “We have one of the most active programmes in the city”, says Roucos, ensuring that 100% of the energy consumed is green, coming from renewable sources. However, there are other aspects, like the Water Less Car Wash system, which washes the cars in the hotel car park, which is free for any electric or hybrid vehicles.

The concept, alongside all creature comforts, can be found in the hotel’s 89 rooms, which include seven large suites. The five elements of Feng Shui (earth, water, fire, wood and metal) are the inspiration for the decor, providing an atmosphere of light, colour, sound and material that combine perfectly with the the Inspira concept. This “harmony of energy” also extends to the fitness centre and the spa, which comes with Turkish bath, sauna and six treatment rooms, ideal for rest and relaxation.

If the exercise gives you an appetite, head downstairs to the Open Brasserie Mediterrânica, which has a policy of sustainable cuisine, using mostly local and regional produce. The Urban Bar is a lounge with a fireplace that is perfect for winter evenings. There is also a games room with a pool table, and auditorium and two meeting rooms – Green Meetings.

With staff with a team spirit, another of the hotel’s focusses is social responsibility, supporting various institutions with a number of protocols. This was the reason why the Portuguese Association of People with Autism made its contribution to decorating the spa and why ACAPO helped train the hotel staff to interact effectively with blind guests.

For all of this and more, it was no surprise when the Portuguese Tourist Authority awarded the Inspira Santa Marta with the environmental sustainability prize in 2012.
