The historical or contemporary combines with comfort at these B&B, which provide a golden and welcoming autumn.

Teatro Bed & Breakfast, Lisboa

Decorated by set designer José Costa Reis, this B&B was refurbished totally by hand and highlights aspects of classic theatre with a modern twist. In the heart of Lisbon, between Chiado and Bairro Alto, it is just a stone’s throw from the main hub of the Portuguese capital’s culture hotspots. In terms of hospitality, there are 15 suites spread over the three floors, each dedicated to different characters of Commedia dell’Arte. The idea is to take guests on a journey through the history of the performing art. When it comes to breakfast, there is a selection worthy of Pantagruel.

The House, Lisboa

This is a tourist project started by someone who dreamed of showcasing Lisbon as one of the world’s most beautiful and welcoming capitals. Located between the Lapa and Estrela neighbourhoods, just a few steps from the Estrela basilica and park, this is a charming B&B that occupies three floors with two suites and five bedrooms with private bathroom. There are two other rooms with a common bathroom called “Quarto dos Rapazes” (The Boys’ Room) and “Quarto de Vestir” (Dressing Room). The terrace, which is a kind of private viewpoint, is the icing on the cake, with a Lisbon sun setting to the sounds of the city and nearby church bells.

Casa da Diná, Odemira

Close to the wonderful beaches of the Costa Vicentina, we find this traditional country house of the region. Simple, comfortable and welcoming. The four double rooms, which are all different, enjoy the natural light of the Alentejo, which makes the decoration even purer. The breakfast prepared by the hostess includes a fine selection of homemade produce, which is either homegrown or from the excellent local markets. Served on the porch, it surprises the guests every morning. Dinner is made up of Portuguese and regional fare.

Dolce Vita Guesthouse, Estoril

An informal ambience is the hallmark of this hotel and owner and resident, Fernando Machado, welcomes all guests personally. Three rooms, a large lounge and dining room with open fire, as well as two balconies with views of the ocean and Sintra mountains are some of the attractions of this comfortable and peaceful accommodation. The mild climate of Costa do Estoril will certainly help you enjoy the pool and large garden, which is bursting with native and exotic species. The philosophy is simple – “a nice place for nice people”.

Guest House Douro, Porto

On the riverfront, this luxury residence (classified as a national monument), overlooks the Douro and the port houses. The 2008 renovation added eight rooms, which are individually decorated while boasting both contemporary comfort and style. The fine personalised service and attention to detail guarantee a unique experience. We recommend the short trip to the dock to embark on a cruise on the wonderful River Douro or a visit to the various historical monuments close by.

The 4Rooms, Porto

Located on the magnificent River Douro, The 4Rooms combines history, tradition, architecture and personalised service. This small, traditional 19th-century Portuguese house was expanded and renovated by the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 2010. It was inaugurated in 2010, and considered by the American travel magazine Travel & Leisure as one of the 25 most elegant and accessible hotels in Europe in 2011. There are two double rooms, a loft with garden and an apartment, which boast natural materials like stone and wood that create a relaxing feel. If this wasn’t enough, the sophisticated Pedro Lemos restaurant is known for its fine fare.
