Hotel Altis
One of Lisbon’s historic hotels returns to the limelight with a new look while having kept the personality that was always its greatest asset.
A timeless classic that always knew how keep up with the times. Originally opened in 1973, in Lisbon’s Rua Castilho, according to director of marketing and public relations, Sofia Nobre, the Altis is a five star hotel “with its own personality and charisma,” despite having recently been refurbished. Located in the heart of the city, the hotel, which boasts 12 floors and 303 elegant rooms and suites, is proud to be part of the international chain Great Luxury Hotels of the World.
Fernando Miranda and Daciano Costa were responsible for the original architecture and interior design and along with the help and services of renowned Portuguese painters and sculptors, they contributed to creating the authentically Portuguese and unique atmospheres of this hotel. This time round it was Cristina Santos e Silva and Ana Menezes Cardoso, who were actually ex-students of the “godfather of Portuguese design”, Daciano Costa, who were responsible for the new interiors that have recaptured the innovative spirit of the original. In addition to this, they have also created a new spirit for the 200 newly-renovated luxury rooms, using ebony and stainless steel furniture that lends them a modern feel with a retro twist. Another interesting addition are the new carpets on every floor, which were also designed by the decorators, which transmit the idea of the infinite and bring the hotel closer to the essence of the Portuguese capital in terms of culture and landscape.
However, it’s in the lobby that the habitués of the Altis will really see the transformation that architect João Paciência has overseen. In shades of black and gold, it has become more ample and ornate and this distinctive ambience is also evident in areas, such as the lounge and Lobby Bar, where, among other things, you can enjoy the desserts of pastry chef Fernando Freitas. Other highlights are the Rendez Vous Coffee Shop, with its creative cuisine, and the art gallery and jeweller’s, which showcase Portuguese artists and craftsmen and women. A few steps away from these is one of the icons of the Altis, Sr. Costa’s Barber, which has maintained “clients since the hotel’s inauguration”.
If your ideal stay includes something to tickle your taste buds, then there’s the D. Fernando restaurant on the top floor, which boasts a family atmosphere and traditional Portuguese dishes created by Chef Artur Roldão, as well as a breathtaking panoramic view with the river Tagus passing and the city centre. To end the evening in fine style, try one of the cocktails made by the S. Jorge Bar staff and lounge on the comfy 1970s retro sofas.
In addition to the 18 conference rooms (which host national and international events) the Altis also offers a highly personalised concierge service. Partnerships with some of the most prestigious museums of the city mean great cultural programmes and an outstanding stay. Enjoy!
