Casa Agrícola da Levada, Vila Real
Transmitting the uniqueness of Trás-os-Montes and local biodiversity are passions that Casa Agrícola da Levada wants to share with visitors. Here, time and tradition have changed little.

In the heart of the winegrowing region of the Douro and two kilometres from the centre of Vila Real, this is a walled farm whose boundaries are forged by the River Corgo. Here, the notion of time differs considerably to that of the big city, which is the great advantage of those who spend a few days in the country. “Our guests experience a new way of being and living in the agricultural world, which is neither faster nor slower than that of the locals”, explains Inês Albuquerque, who runs Casa Agrícola da Levada. To engage those who want to get to know the region, its population and ways of life, the hotel maintains the essence of the place, providing unique experiences. For example, guests can break with routine and shadow a shepherd for a day.

On arrival, the flowers and cheerful atmosphere set the tone, awakening the senses and “desire to discover the area”, which is why the focus is on longer stays. As a tourist attraction, Casa da Levada seeks always to be one step ahead, helping guests to organise their day and providing all the necessary information on local and regional itineraries. For this reason, there are maps that guide tourists on various trips, both the standard and less well-trodden ones. “This is that bit extra that we give as a hotel. What gives me the greatest pleasure is seeing people leaving here having acquired something new”, adds Inês. In reality, the idea is to allow tourists to absorb a little of what she had grown up with. Other objectives are preserving local traditions and the family house, as well as memory and heritage.
Located at one of the extremes of the Demarcated Port Region, Casa Agrícola da Levada dates back to 1922 – the main building was designed by Raul Lino –, having been adapted for tourism in 2002. The farm boasts six hectares and is made up of the farmhouse and six old-style houses. The former is outstanding for its elegant architecture and decorative style. With four double rooms in art deco style, the place transmits a “joy and light feel that’s different to traditional houses”, which is highlighted by the roses, treasure flowers and begonias. All of the other houses are 17th century and used to belong to the old village. Some were renovated but retain their original style, with granite walls and wooden floors with a light and functional décor that gives off “good vibrations”.
