From Alfama to Bica, visiting the capital’s parks and public gardens, Gulbenkian director of communications Elisabete Caramelo’s itinerary includes enjoying a drink with a river view and a little dance for good measure.

Born in Lisbon, where she studied Social Communication atUniversidade Nova, she has worked in the press, radio and television, recalling the programme CineMagazine with particular fondness. Previously the press secretary for Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio, she has been Director of Communications of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation for the last five years.

Ageless Alfama

“The clothes on the line, neighbours at the window, kids playing in the street and the sound of fado fill the streets of Alfama with a life all of its own. This is my favourite Lisbon neighbourhood because it combines both old and new and because it’s very much the genuine article. I start my tour in Rua das Cruzes da Se and then walk up Rua dos Remedios. I stop off at the Cruzes Credo café, which has a young and laid-back atmosphere and good petiscos (Portuguese version of tapas).”

Food for all seasons

“I like traditional and modern Portuguese cuisine (de auteur). So, for lunch, I plump for either Palmeira or Cantinho do Avillez. From the former, I recommend the duck rice and fava beans. From the latter, scallops on sweet potato or the Barroso beef hamburger.”

Made in the shade

“After the city council’s recent intervention, Lisbon’s parks have a new lease of life. My favourites are Estrela, Torel and Botto Machado(next to the Feira da Ladra flea market), which has the city’s loveliest kiosk (Clara Clara), and great lemonade. And then there are the Gulbenkian gardens, which are like a home from home.”

Liquid gold

“Portuguese wines are getting better and better! I buy mine atGarrafeira de Campo Ourique where Sr. Santos helps me make the right choice. In Guerra Junqueiro, there’s an original market which I usually go to with fantastic produce and products. It’s calledMercearia Criativa and it’s great. ”

Slurping at sunset

Watching the sunset on the terrace of Noobai is a classic, be it in summer or winter. Another place with great vistas, and where I enjoy a drink in the late afternoon, is Lost In, which has fantastic red fruitcaipirinhas.”

Flavours of other worlds

“I’m a bit of a gourmand and enjoy food from other parts of the world. For dinner, I opt for the fusion cuisine of Umai, where I’ve became a fan of the prawn tempura with almond flakes. Another of my favourites is the cosy Le Petit Bistrô, in the Bica quarter.”

Night rhythms

“I get warmed up at Bicaense and then head to Teatro do Bairro. It’s multi-functional, where you can do a bit of everything: have a drink or dance, see a concert or a performance. Fridays are normally theme nights, with music that ranges from morna (Cape Verdean musc) to jazz. Sundays are for cinema.”
